Spanish Long Term Plan

How We Teach Spanish:

At Rack House, Spanish is taught weekly across Key Stage 2. Our curriculum is progressive and designed to build vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar over time. Each year group revisits and builds upon key language structures so pupils retain and apply their knowledge with increasing confidence.

Children are introduced to high-frequency vocabulary through topics such as greetings, family, animals, food, weather, school life, and hobbies. They learn to understand and construct sentences, ask and answer questions, and engage in dialogue. Lessons combine speaking and listening activities with games, songs, stories and role play to make learning memorable and engaging.

To support deeper learning, we include:

  • Repetition and retrieval practice

  • Visual and physical cues to reinforce vocabulary

  • Opportunities to explore culture through music, celebrations and customs

  • Links to other areas of the curriculum (e.g. geography, art, PSHE)

To further support children’s language learning, all pupils have access to the online learning platform, LanguageNut, where they can complete activities linked to our Spanish lessons.

Assessment focuses on pupil confidence, accurate pronunciation, vocabulary recall and their ability to use Spanish in real contexts.

The Results of Our Approach:

By the time they leave us, pupils at Rack House can:

  • Understand and respond to spoken Spanish using familiar phrases and questions

  • Engage in simple conversations with accurate pronunciation and intonation

  • Read and write short phrases and sentences with increasing accuracy

  • Use basic grammar, such as gender, adjectives and verb forms

  • Demonstrate curiosity and respect for Spanish-speaking cultures

The impact of our Spanish curriculum is evidenced through:

  • Pupil Engagement: Children enjoy learning Spanish and participate actively in lessons, responding positively to speaking and listening tasks.

  • Communication Skills: Pupils articulate their thoughts in Spanish with increasing confidence, engaging in conversations with peers. Their willingness to speak in Spanish reflects improved self-esteem and language competence.

  • Progress and Retention: Children make good progress in vocabulary and grammar, with learning built on year by year. End-of-unit tasks and recall activities show knowledge is retained.

  • Cultural Understanding: Pupils recognise traditions, festivals and everyday life in Spanish-speaking countries and show respect for cultural differences.

  • Pupil Proficiency: End-of-year assessments and regular evaluations demonstrate significant progress in Spanish language skills, with a majority of pupils achieving or exceeding age-related expectations by the end of Key Stage 2.

In summary, the dedicated approach to teaching Spanish at Rack House Primary School is designed to deliver an outstanding educational experience, preparing our children for a multicultural world and equipping them with valuable language skills.
