At Rack House Primary School, literacy is the foundation of our curriculum—woven through everything we do from the age of two. Our approach to reading, writing and oracy is purposeful, inclusive and designed to equip every child with the language and confidence to thrive.
Reading begins with strong phonics teaching through the Little Wandle programme, ensuring children decode fluently and build a lifelong love of books. From stories and poems to non-fiction and diverse texts, our reading curriculum develops comprehension, empathy, and global awareness.
Writing is taught as a creative and reflective process. Children learn to express their ideas clearly and confidently through a structured, inclusive curriculum that builds skills progressively—from early mark-making to fluent, purposeful writing across a range of genres.
Oracy is a core pillar of our school. Children are explicitly taught to speak, listen, question and debate, using talk as a tool for learning across all subjects. From storytelling to structured discussion, oracy builds confidence, vocabulary, and critical thinking.
We believe every child deserves to be heard, to read with understanding, and to write with impact. At Rack House Primary School, we empower children to find their voice—and use it to shape their future.
