Special Educational Needs
Rack House is an inclusive school where every child’s unique learning journey is valued. We believe that every child has the right to an excellent education, beginning with Quality First Teaching – high-quality, inclusive classroom practice that is adapted to meet individual needs. While most children make good progress with this approach, some may need additional support.
Children whose attainment is significantly below the expected range, either overall or in specific subjects or areas, may be identified as having Special Educational Needs (SEN). These needs may relate to:
- Communication and interaction
- Cognition and learning
- Social, emotional and mental health
- Sensory and/or physical needs
In line with the SEND Code of Practice (2015), a child is considered to have Special Educational Needs (SEN) if they have significantly greater difficulty with learning than others of the same age, or if a disability makes it harder for them to access the same opportunities as their peers.
Our Commitment to Every Child
Every child deserves the chance to succeed and feel confident in their learning. At Rack House, we provide a caring and supportive environment that nurtures both academic achievement and personal growth. Our aim is to ensure that all children, whatever their needs, are given the tools and encouragement to thrive and reach their full potential.
We do this by:
- Recognising and building on each child’s strengths, celebrating achievements in all areas of school life.
- Nurturing self-esteem and fostering a culture of respect where every child feels valued.
- Ensuring equal access to academic, social and practical opportunities, whatever a child’s needs or background.
- Identifying children’s needs early through regular assessment and monitoring.
- Removing barriers to learning through adaptations, personalised support and full curriculum access for pupils with SEND.
- Supporting children with SEND to make strong academic and social progress, and to develop the skills and confidence they need for the future.
- Working in close partnership with parents and carers so that support is planned and reviewed together.
- Providing staff with training and guidance so that teaching is inclusive, responsive and effective.
- Collaborating with external agencies such as Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, and Occupational Therapists to ensure children receive the specialist support they need.
Our Senior Leadership Team, SENCo, teachers, subject leaders and support staff all share this commitment. Together, and with the support of families and external professionals, we ensure that children with SEND are well supported, barriers to learning are reduced, and every child has the opportunity to succeed and enjoy school life.
