We are a GOLD Rights Respecting School!

We have successfully achieved UNICEF's UK Gold Award for our Rights Respecting work at Rack House Primary.

What is the Rights Respecting Schools Award?

The Rights Respecting Schools Award puts children’s rights at the heart of school life in the UK.

The UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. Our Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.

Using the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as our guide, we are working with more UK schools than almost any other organisation. Over 1.6 million children in the UK go to a Rights Respecting School and over 5,000 schools up and down the country are working through the Award. Schools work with us on a journey to become fully Rights Respecting.

The Award recognises a school’s achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within the school and beyond.

Rights Respecting Steering Group at Rack House Primary School

Our Rights Respecting Steering Group are proud to play a crucial role in continuing to embed our UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) Gold standard into every aspect of school life.

Our Mission

The mission of our Rights Respecting Steering Group is to create a safe, inspiring, and inclusive environment where every child is respected, their talents are nurtured, and they are able to thrive. We are committed to ensuring that children's rights are at the heart of our school’s ethos and culture.

By maintaining the Gold standard of the Rights Respecting Schools Award, we aim to ensure that every child at Rack House Primary School can enjoy their rights and reach their full potential in a caring and nurturing environment.

Our child-led, diverse team of children, teachers and parents drive the agenda for change and improvement across school.

  • Rights Respecting Behaviour Award (Article 12: You have the right to give your opinion and for adults to listen and take it seriously)

Our Rights Respecting Steering Group is dedicated to promoting exemplary behaviour, aligned with the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). In assembly every week, The Steering Group pupils award a trophy and certificate to one child from each phase across school (EYFS. KS1 and KS2) for outstanding Rights Respecting behaviour, fostering a culture of respect and recognition throughout our school. The trophy is proudly displayed on the winner's desk or in their classroom for the week, before being passed on to the next recipient. Each child takes their certificate home.

  • Social Media Awareness Campaign (Article 17:You have the right to get information that is important to your wellbeing)

Our Rights Respecting Steering Group conducted a survey among Year 5 and 6 pupils to learn about their online habits. The results revealed that many children were using their devices before bedtime. In response, the Steering Group researched the harmful effects of blue light and the benefits of switching off devices early. They then planned and delivered informative lessons to educate their peers on these findings, promoting healthier online habits and well-being.

  • Wet Play Initiative (Article 31: You have the right to play and rest)

Recently, an issue was raised at one of the Steering Group meetings regarding the lack of activities during a wet break. They proposed a box activities which would be kept in each classroom. The steering group consulted thier classes as to what they would like to see in a wet play box, for example board games etc. The boxes were introduced, based on the children’s ideas. The Steering Group then took an example box into assembly to explain how and why they will be used. They emphasised everyone’s responsibility to look after the resources and tidy up, ready for the next use.

  • Playground Revamp!  (Article 12: You have the right to give your opinion and for adults to listen and take it seriously)

Our steering group took feedback from their class on different aspects of school life. One suggestion, which they put to Mr Corbett (Pastoral Lead) and Miss Ashraf (Deputy Headteacher) at their Steering Group Meeting, was to make some improvements to the school playground. The steering group then met with the Deputy Head and a design company (Uniplay), so that the children could make decisions on new playground markings, to increase physical activity and wellbeing outside (Article 24, 31). These markings have been completed, encouraging more children to participate outside.

  • Steering Group Elect a new Member (Article 15: You have the right to join or set up groups, as long as it isn't harmful to others)

Our Steering Group received lots of feedback from other pupils, wishing they could join! They decided it was fair to give others an opportunity. Our Deputy Head Boy, Ben, made an amazing poster in his spare time, advertising the vacancy.

Congratulations to Ananya, in year 5, for being chosen by The Steering Group as their newest member!

  • Soccer Aid!! (Article 24 - You have The Right to a clean and safe Environment

Our children watched Soccer Aid challenge videos and discussed why Soccer Aid is important. They then took part in Soccer Aid sports challenges. To finish the week, we held a ‘wear blue day’ to raise money for UNICEF. Thank you to everyone who got involved and helped us raise £150!

Through Soccer Aid for UNICEF you are supporting UNICEF’s vital work with families, communities and trusted organisations to create and protect safe spaces for children to play..

  • Steering Group meet the Catering Manager (Article 12: You have the right to give your opinion and for adults to listen and take it seriously)

Our Year 5 and 6 Steering Group members met with Tracey, the catering manager, to feedback on our food options at school. They really enjoy lots of our dishes, like Jalfrezi pasta and BBQ children. They discussed vegetarian and vegan options and the fact they enjoy the salad and fresh fruit on offer. Tracey agreed with them that a fruit salad would be a tasty and healthy option in the future.

  • Global Goals Lessons (Article 2 - ALL children have rights, no matter who they are)

Our key stage 1 and 2 children have enjoyed their UNICEF Global Goals lesson this year and have pledged to make changes which help contribute to a better future for all.
